Wombwell Foundry v Jump United

Wellington Inn F.C.. 1968/69 - 1975/76

Formed in 1968 by Harold (Trav) Travil. Based at the Wellington Inn. His vision was to form a Football team for the Village to be proud of..Some of Travs early team players a young Philp Baker (69/70) 'Wolverhampton Wonderers',  John Jennings (1969/76) 'Barnsley FC, Wolverhampton Wonderers'..Jimmy Longden, Albert Longden, and the more experienced players Greg Wordsworth, Keith 'Cobby' Weston. For a football team to achieve success is to have the reliability and safe hands of a goalkeeper. In 1969 Trav made his way down Wombwell to visit such a goalkeeper, Ged Silcock (1969/76) 'Barnsley FC,(team mate Barry 'Spud' Murphy) Northern Premier League, South Shields', to become part of Travs vision. In the 1968/69 Season Jump Wellington Inn FC had joined the  Mexborough Sunday League. (MSL)  After that first season finishing mid table, the following season (1970/71) Wellington Inn FC won the MSL 3rd Division title..In the 1971/72 season Wellington Inn FC won the MSL 2nd Division title..Promoting the team into the Mexborough Sunday League Division 1..

That 1972/73 Season brought together the Legendary Wellington Inn FC

'Dream Team'

This Team Won The Division 1 League Title and All given Cup Competitions..They did not lose a Competitive game throughout the 1972/73 Season...

They played that many games in that season due to cup competitions, including local cup competitions Blacker Hill Cup..etc..that they couldn't  fulfill their league game fixture. Mexborough Sunday League had a 'closing down' date..At that date Wellington Inn FC were second in division 1, having played 5/6 games less than the other teams and were rewarded Runner-up medal...Because of this unjust situation, Mexborough Sunday League and ruling bodies decided to have a play-off between the suppose league winners and the Wellington Inn FC, which Wellington Inn FC won quite comfortably...

Unfortunately, This squad only stayed together for one season..Many consider this team to be the finest ever in the Yorkshire area..

Though the Wellington Inn fielded  a weaken side due to the ineligibility of Victor Vaines, John Jenning, Kevin Vickers and Russ Whittacker due to these players having played in the 'Yorkshire League' the team gave a top performance against very good opposition....

1975/76 Blacker Hill Runners-up

Sadly, 1975/76 was the last season for 'Travs' Wellington Inn FC..All the top players had left over the previous seasons, all that was left from his 1968/69 vision was, John Jennings and Ged Silcock.

Just to give an insight into how good and respected Wellington Inn FC were throughout the seasons.. The club booked a single Decker bus to every away game..it was so full that on most occasions some of the players were standing, the committee and manager 'Trav' had to tell the supports to stand to let the players sit down..However, no one had big enough balls to tell Eva...This lady herself is just as legendary as that of the Football Club itself...

Though the Wellington Inn carried on until the 1975/76 season and did relevantly well, they never again achieved the heights or success of that one only season 'Dream Team' of 1972/73

Wellington Inn 1978/79

In 1978 Jim Longdon a member of ‘Travs’ 1972 team, reformed the Wellington Inn FC as manager. Jim had long since retired from competitive football, through ankle/leg injuries...

To-Date, 2020 there is no football team in the Village, Such a shame considering the tradition and  great teams of our past...
